THE INTERIOR CONCEPT OF A TWO-ROOM APARTMENT
The design of 44.15m2 two-room apartment which holds a hallway – 3.9m2, a kitchen annexe – 6.00m2, a living room – 17.39m2, a double bedroom – 11.93m2, a bathroom – 4.89m2 and an outer balcony – 3.64m2.
The basic functional premise of the design was to create a classical division of the interior into a daily and a night zone. Thus the small surface of this two-room apartment features the isolated entrance space - separated from the rest of the flat by a small hallway – which leads to the bedroom and the bathroom. The living-room area, in turn, is connected to the open space kitchen annexe through a dining table. This particular arrangement of the inner space allows an independent functioning of both of the zones without disturbing their distinct identities. The major element – a dominant organizing the interior – is a meander-like frame. It has been assigned to several functions. Based against the existing chimney it acts as a dining table, then curls up to the ceiling from which it, as a lamp lights the table, and then, developing further, changes into a supporting construction for wardrobes, and seating on the hallway side. Then it curls up again into another ceiling lamp and, finally, ends up as a vertical element in the form of a sizeable mirror. The meander frame both unites and separates the varied areas of the interior serving, simultaneously, as a functional construction for different furnishing and lighting purposes. The L-shaped kitchen annexe opens onto the living room. The style-line of the overall design is modern and minimalistic; the colour of the walls, floors and the furniture develops into shades of white contrasting with the dark colouring of the frame. The black variation on the material of the meander frame creates a sophisticated black-and- white environment, whereas its natural veneer variation – american walnut, for example – in connection with the existing shades of white warms the inside giving it the feel of softened simplicity. The floor is made from whitewashed wooden boards; the meander frame and some furniture elements are from MDF plates in black or veneer, either with sheen or matte finish. The shades of white on the walls are acrylic paint, whereas some of the bathroom and kitchen walls are breccia white stony marble plates. The floor in the bathroom is made of nero africa polished granite plates.
